Strandingskroen (“The Beaching Inn”)

Strandingskroen functions as Strandhotellet’s official event – and conference facilities. The inn is protected under classification “A” but has recently been renovated with a delicate touch, to create the same light and relaxing atmosphere as you will experience at the hotel. The inn sets the scene for storytelling, authenticity, and of course fine dining, which is delivered daily by the competent chefs at Strandhotellet.

The initial owner Jens Carl Bang Klitgaard (also known as “Old Klitgaard”), who owned the historic inn in the olden days, primarily used the building for trading goods coming on shore on special kinds of vessels from the Northern Sea. But when the golden times of this type of trade were running out,  – i.e. due to the establishment of the railroad from Aalborg to Frederikshavn, and later on from Aalborg to Løkken, it was the end of the trading era in Blokhus.

Klitgaard and his wife Christiane then started to run an inn, that provided comfort and charity to the poor and shipwrecked guests. It was not uncommon that Christiane (“also called Madame Klitgaard”) hosted 45 lodgers.

“Old Klitgaard” died in 1877, but before his passing, he had turned the business over to his youngest son Niels Bondrup Klitgaard, who became the last one to facilitate this kind of trade. He was also foresighted and transformed his business and property into Klitgaards Badehotel (Klitgaard’s Seaside Hotel).

Strandhotellet’s acquisition of Strandingskroen is hence a fusion between Blokhus’s oldest and newest seaside hotel, and so the story continues..
